3 Signs It’s Time To Quit A Bad Job

Quitting a job can be a daunting mission. Deep down, you’re probably full of courage, ready and waiting to say all the things you really want to say to your boss about how you feel towards your job. You know you deserve a healthy work environment and are being called to move into something new.

Knowing when it’s the right time to quit can be tricky. Maybe your boss is really good at saying just the right thing at the right time to keep you hooked on the job. Maybe your relationship with your coworkers makes you feel like you need to stick out the tough times for them.

When particular tasks or responsibilities pertaining to your job drain you, don’t excite or engage you in any meaningful way anymore, it may be time to move on. There are always parts of a job that may be less than ideal, but when more of your job is made up of tasks and activities that negatively draw energy away from you, then you know it is time to start looking.

There are some tell-tale signs that make it easy for you to know when it’s time to hit the road and say goodbye.

There’s No Room for Growth or Advancement

It’s always a good feeling to get a promotion or recognition for a job well done. If you receive a bonus, raise or award for all of your hard work, it can make a less-than-dreamy job worth it. If you’re consistently taking on additional projects, saying, “Yes!” to your boss’s every whim and not receiving any extra benefits or perks for it, it’s time to take your efforts elsewhere. Another company may appreciate you and your skills more than your current job and find value in what you can offer them.

Sometimes, all it takes is a conversation with your employer about moving into a position that better reflects what your current workload is. If they don’t have something immediately available, ask them if they would consider creating a position that fits the amount of work you’re doing now. If you can’t reach an agreement and it seems you’ve hit the ceiling of the company you’re in, start that job search!

You Experience a Feeling of Dread Going to Work

I get it. Waking up early, spending time commuting and spending hours indoors on a beautiful day isn’t what anyone wants. We would probably all rather be doing other things than working. However, most people have to work in some capacity to live the life they want and support themselves and their families. 

That being said, if you experience a strong feeling of anxiety, dread and overall contempt for your workplace, it may be in the best interest of your overall mental and physical health to look for other employment opportunities. Going to work may not be the greatest time you have all day, but it shouldn’t leave you in a state of panic and unease. Most people spend the majority of their day working, whether that be in an office or at home, and if you don’t have even the slightest likeness for your job, it’s not going to be sustainable long term.

You’ve Talked to Your Boss with No Results

If you’ve been considering leaving your current job and are ready to beef up your resume and hit the job hunting trail, having a final discussion with your boss could resolve your issues you have with your position and save you the trouble of looking for something else. If you hit a wall with them and feel they aren’t going to work with you on negotiating key aspects of your position, it’s okay to resign and find something better suited to you and your skill set. There’s no shame in quitting something that no longer serves you well! 

At the very least, you leave knowing you did the best job you could and took the necessary steps to try to resolve any issues before pulling the plug. You can’t control other people but you can certainly control yourself and your actions, making the best choice for you. 

Whenever you decide to quit your job, it will be the right time. More than likely, something or someone has been pushing you in that direction for a while, so when it finally happens, it most likely won’t be a shock to you or your employer. Stay strong and firm in your choice and hold your ground.
