Encore Careers: 5 Ways To Use LinkedIn To Find Your Next Career Move

Encore careers are growing in popularity as Boomers and GenX’rs chose to pivot their later working years to careers that feel more meaningful and fulfilling. In an encore career, people often move to non-profit, public interests, or social services sectors with the desire to apply their skills and passions to the greater good while maintaining benefits and income until they are ready to retire.

If you’re considering this type of career shift, here are five ways you can use LinkedIn to explore Encore careers.

1. Learn About The Encore Movement

Want to learn more about pursuing an encore career or decide if it’s for you?  LinkedIn Learning has a terrific course on Encore Careers by Marci Alboher where she provides an overview of the encore movement and tips on how to investigate opportunities and determine the path that’s right for you.

2. Get Connected

LinkedIn connections and LinkedIn Groups offer a great way to find and network with people who have similar interests. Join their discussions and follow people or organizations that appear to be thought leaders in your area of interest. This networking can build your knowledge and provide potential leads for the next phase of your career.

3. Create Your Personal Brand

Your LinkedIn profile tells the story of you, your brand. Use it to showcase your interests, expertise, and passions; all the things that make you unique! Spotlighting your talents instead of a list of job titles is more likely to show what you have to offer to potential employers in different employment sectors.

4. Research On LinkedIn

There is a wealth of information on LinkedIn. Search on industries or companies to understand hiring trends. View career paths for inspiration or search on events for job fairs, services, and networking. The resources are vast and can lead to many ideas and opportunities.

5. Search For Your Next Job On LinkedIn

And since getting hired is the end goal, the LinkedIn job search functionality makes it easy for you to research opportunities. You can search by company, industry, keywords, roles, and geographies.

If you have specific goals in mind, narrow your search criteria and set up alerts so you don’t miss new postings. Apply for jobs within LinkedIn and be sure to also use the platform to research and prepare for interviews.

While finding your encore career will require some decisions, research, and thoughtful planning on your part it will most likely result in a meaningful and exciting new phase in your career. LinkedIn can provide the resources you need to navigate this discovery phase and start your new journey.
