Many interviews are taken place online with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet,... Along with the development of virtual meeting platforms are there in-app innovations such as “screen sharing”, “annotating”, and “recording”,... Knowing that these buttons bring a better experience for participants, they should be used effectively.
Virtual interviews are getting more common when the distance between hirers and applicants is too far. Recording these interviews has become increasingly popular. This article discusses the ethical considerations and best practices of recording virtual interviews.
Ethical considerations:
Here are 4 main factors that should be considered carefully before recording a virtual interview.
Consent: At the beginning of the interview, the interviewer must inform the interviewee about the recording process and get his/her agreement. This can be done by explaining carefully the purpose of the recording. The agreement must be obtained in writing or verbally.
Privacy: The interviewee’s privacy must be respected. When the interview is completed, the interviewer must guarantee that the recording is stored securely and not shared with unauthorized individuals without the applicant’s permission.
Accuracy: Ensure that the recording correctly represents the interviewee's answers, and avoid manipulating or modifying the tape in any way that may be seen as misleading or unethical.
Confidentiality: Respect the interviewee's confidentiality by not disclosing the recording or any personal information to third parties without their express permission.

Best practices:
During the interview process, it is highly recommended to follow these advice for best performance.
Before the interview:
Test the equipment: The equipment must be tested carefully before the interview regardless of recording or not. Ensure that the speaker, micro, and recording equipment are functioning properly and the sound quality is clear.
Inform the interviewee: Inform the interviewee that the interview will be recorded and acquire their permission. Tell them the purpose and intended use of the recording.
Start and End the recording: For better performance, clearly indicate when the recording starts and stops to avoid any confusion or ambiguity.
After the interview
Review the recording: Listen to the recording after the interview to ensure that it accurately reflects the interviewee's responses and that there are no technical issues that could affect the quality of the recording.
Store the recording securely: Store the recording in a secure location to ensure that it is not lost or accessed by unauthorized individuals.
Delete the recording: If the recording is no longer needed, delete it to ensure that it is not accidentally shared or accessed by unauthorized individuals. Inform the related interviewee about the deletion if needed.
In summary, recording virtual interviews can be a useful tool for gathering information and conducting interviews remotely. However, it is important to follow ethical considerations and best practices to ensure that the interview process is fair, respectful, and legally compliant.
