Should I Linkedin Connect With Someone After An Interview?

Follow-up after an interview is an ideal way to make a great impression, which also increases the possibility of success. It is necessary as it shows your appreciation to the interviewer and your passion for this position. While there are several ways to follow-up, I would recommend you should think carefully before sending a connection request via LinkedIn.

Connecting and widening professional relationships is one of the main purposes of LinkedIn - the world’s largest professional network platform. Knowing that having a large number of connections shows that you are professional, you should consider carefully who should and should not connect before sending any request.

Should I LinkedIn Connect With My Hirer After An Interview?

What a tough question! It depends on how your interview went. How was it? How did you feel? Was it a valuable talk? Was there a positive connection between the interviewer and you?

It is undeniable that connection with the Human Resources department is a plus to your job-seeking journey. Your hirer and you had a chance to get to know each other. You also showed them your abilities and achievements (both in your resume and interview process). Therefore, LinkedIn connections will bring future opportunities.

Your connection request shows that you care much about the company and job position you are applying to. However, be mindful when you send any connection requests on LinkedIn. Remember to add a short message telling who you are, how you found them, and why you wanted to connect. While it takes only two minutes to write a note, employers are more likely to accept a connected invitation that includes a note, especially personalizing them.

Here is an example of a LinkedIn Invitation to Connect message to your recruiter:

Hi (Employer name),

It was great speaking to you today/yesterday at the interview for (position) at (company). Thank you so much for meeting with me and letting me learn more about the team. I am very excited about this opportunity to become a member of your team. I will be very grateful if I can connect you with other professionals in my field.

Sincerely,

(Your name)

Why Not LinkedIn?

Too easy, Low impression

Put yourself in the interviewer’s shoes, you meet many applicants a day. Hence, he/she/they may not remember you among the pool of candidates. If you still want to connect, please anticipate being ignored as the worst scenario.

What if you do not get the job offer?

Think thoughtfully if you will not be given the job offer for this position. Is it still reasonable for the hirer to accept your connection request?

So, what should you do instead?

Send a thank you note.

If you are considering whether to connect on LinkedIn or not, you can definitely skip this step. Instead, focus more on a thank you note/email to your interviewer. It is much more formal and professional to write a thank you note and send it to your employer. Here are some templates for a good thank you note. Don’t be shy, be SHINE! Good luck with your career!
