The Graduation Checklist For 2024 University Grads

As a university professor who lives my life by the academic year calendar, I am always amazed and flabbergasted that we sit, here again, this time of year, celebrating another graduation cycle! Graduating from university is a monumental milestone, marking the transition from academic life to the professional world- in short, it’s a big deal! As the Class of 2024 prepares to don their caps and gowns, there are several crucial steps to ensure a smooth and successful transition. If you are interested in reading my grad check list from 2021 or 2022, I will link them here.

1. Complete All Academic Requirements

First and foremost, make sure you have met all your academic requirements. Sounds simple right, but not always. Maybe you have some waivers or incomplete on some old classes that never got resolved or recorded correctly. Be sure to do your own checks via your online registration system and book an appointment to meet or email with your academic advisor to confirm that you’ve completed the necessary credits, courses, and any additional requirements specific to your major. Double, heck triple, check your transcript for any discrepancies or missing grades that need to be addressed.

2. Apply for Graduation

Most students don’t know that you actually have to apply to graduate! Universities typically require students to apply for graduation well in advance of the actual ceremony. Ensure that you’ve submitted your graduation application by the deadline. This process often includes verifying your personal information, confirming your degree program, and ordering your cap and gown.

3. Prepare for the Graduation Ceremony

Ok, time to get excited! As the big day approaches, make sure you’re ready for the ceremony itself. Order your cap, gown, and any honor cords or stoles you’re eligible for. Check the date, time, and location of your ceremony, and make arrangements for family and friends who plan to attend. It’s also a good idea to familiarize yourself with the commencement schedule and any rehearsal sessions. If you got to an urban school (like where I work) make sure you know where you are parking and what streets are closed/open.

4. Plan Your Future Career Path

Graduation is just the beginning of your professional journey. Take time to explore your career options, update your resume, and start applying for jobs. Utilize your university’s career services for resume reviews, mock interviews, and job search assistance. Networking with alumni and attending job fairs can also provide valuable connections and opportunities. 5. Financial Planning

If you haven’t already, open a savings account and start setting aside money for future goals. Understanding your financial situation early on can prevent stress and help you make informed decisions. 6. Health and Wellness

Transitioning from university life to the professional world can be stressful. Prioritize your health and wellness by maintaining a balanced lifestyle. This includes regular exercise, a healthy diet, and sufficient sleep. Mental health is equally important, so don’t hesitate to seek support from counselors or mental health professionals if needed. 7. Stay Connected

Your time at university has likely forged many important relationships. Stay connected with your peers, professors, and mentors. Join alumni associations and attend reunions or networking events. These connections can provide support, advice, and opportunities as you advance in your career.

8. Celebrate Your Achievements

Finally, take the time to celebrate your hard work and achievements. Graduation is a significant milestone that deserves recognition. Whether it’s a small gathering with family and friends or a larger celebration, make sure to commemorate this special occasion.
