Tips To Furnish Tiny Work From Home Offices

Ah—the sweet smell of WFH life.

If you’re lucky enough to work from home, you’ve probably questioned or had thoughts about the best way to set up and furnish your home office—especially if it’s tiny.

Long story short: there isn’t one right answer. How you set up your home office will vary based on the space you have to work with, the job you do, and your personal design and work style. Nonetheless, there are still tips to follow that can make setting up and furnishing your home office easy and stress free.

As a freelance writer who works totally remote, I can vouch for these simple, yet effective work from home office tips:

1. Be Mindful of Where Your Home Office is

If you’re working with a tiny space, you may not have a ton of options when it comes to where you can set up your home office. However, if you do have options to choose from, here are some things to consider:

One, place your desk in front of a window so you can see outside during the day. Two, set up your office in a part of your home that gets a lot of natural light. Strategically choosing to work with these two setups can do wonders for your productivity and headspace.

Plus, WFH life can lead to feeling cooped up sometimes, so, setting up your work space in this way helps combat that feeling.

2. Be Strategic When Choosing a Desk

One of the biggest ways to make your tiny home office feel bigger than it is, is by choosing a desk that maximizes open space. Luckily, there are a ton of desks on the market made to suit different spaces and needs.

Some things you should look for include skinnier desk legs and more strategically designed storage. Narrow desks also work great for small spaces. If your space is really limited, consider a mounted wall desk. These are perfect because when you’re not actively working, you can fold the desk up to the wall.

3. Consider Different Chair Options

Another way to make the most out of your space is by choosing a chair that works with it. You may be inclined to choose a basic black desk chair on wheels, but there are SO many other options out there.

Some features to play around with include desk chairs having or not having wheels, arm rests, cushioning, adjustability, and more. I definitely recommend prioritizing comfort when choosing a chair, but by considering different options, you can really customize and make the most out of your small space.

4. Get Organized

Organization is EVERYTHING when it comes to setting up a tiny work from home office. When you keep things neatly arranged and put away in bins, cups, and organizers, you create a tidy, clutter free workspace.

Setting up organization habits and strategies from the get-go also makes things easier to maintain in the long run. By knowing where everything is and goes, you can help prevent yourself from getting stressed over little things during the average work day.

5. Utilize Your Wall Space

When you’re dealing with a small space, you have to be strategic about your desk layout and where to store things. Instead of relying on your desk for storage, utilize your wall space. Try installing floating shelves and hanging things like pictures and a calendar on the wall, instead of on your desk.

The same goes for any decorations and tchotchkes you have. By placing them up above, you maximize the amount of work space you really have. And by keeping your desk open, clean, and clutter free, you’ll feel less cramped even in a smaller space.

6. Shop Secondhand

Before you go running to the store to drop some serious cash on a home office makeover, consider furnishing your office secondhand. You can check places like Facebook Marketplace, but also local thrift stores in your area.

Furnishing your office this way is great because it’s environmentally friendly, cost effective, and fun! Plus, you never know what you’ll find when you shop secondhand, and so you can end up with some really unique pieces.

7. Bonus Tip: Use Pinterest!

If furnishing your home office feels overwhelming or you don’t know where to begin, head to Pinterest! Pinterest can be an amazing resource for gathering ideas and inspiration. Search terms like “WFH office” or “home office ideas.” Then, you can create a vision board to refer back to while you shop.
