Job interviews can be nerve-wracking, especially for young professionals and first-time job seekers. You have a limited amount of time to make a lasting impression, and one way to do this is by providing concise yet impactful answers.

As an interview coach, I teach my clients the STAR method, which allows you to showcase your transferable skills and connect your past experiences with future opportunities in a powerful but short way during interviews. In this article, I'll show you how to leverage the STAR method to keep your interview answers short but powerful.

The Power of the STAR Method

The STAR method is an interview technique that stands for Situation, Task, Action, and Result. It provides a structured way to respond to behavioral interview questions, which often begin with phrases like "Tell me about a time when..." or "Give me an example of..."

Situation: Start by briefly describing the context or situation you were in. Keep this part concise. Provide the necessary background information to set the stage for your response.

Task: Explain the specific task or challenge you needed to address. Highlight the goals or objectives you were trying to achieve.

Action: Describe the actions you took to address the situation and accomplish the task. Focus on what you did, not what the team did. Use action verbs and emphasize your personal contribution.

Result: Conclude your response by sharing the outcome or result of your actions. Quantify the impact whenever possible. Did you achieve your goals, and what did you learn from the experience?

What makes the STAR method particularly powerful is its ability to highlight transferable skills, which are skills you've gained in one context that are applicable in various situations. These skills are highly sought after by employers because they demonstrate your adaptability and potential to excel in new roles.

Here's how to use the STAR method to emphasize transferable skills:

Before the interview, make a list of transferable skills you possess. For example, these could include communication, problem-solving, leadership, adaptability, time management, and more. By identifying these key skills, you can consider examples from past experiences (paid positions or otherwise, like being a student in school) where you demonstrated these skills.

When you are preparing your STAR stories, it’s important they showcase these transferable skills. Think about how each story exemplifies your ability to adapt and excel in different situations. To make your answers specific to the job, make sure you are picking skills relevant to the role you are interviewing for. Not sure where to start?

Read the job description! Employers are typically very good at outlining specific skills, abilities, education, etc. that they are looking for in job descriptions, all you have to do is read it and apply it as you are creating your answers.

Remember, many interviews are 30 minutes or less so keep in mind that your goal is to deliver your answers in a short but impactful way. Focus on the most relevant details that directly demonstrate your transferable skills and avoid unnecessary details or tangents.

After sharing your STAR story, explicitly connect the skills demonstrated in that story to the specific requirements of the job you're interviewing for. Show the interviewer how your past experiences are directly applicable to the new role.

Sample STAR Response:

Interviewer: "Can you give me an example of a time when you had to handle a challenging team project?"

Situation: “Yes, of course. In my previous role as a project manager at Company X..."

Task: "I was tasked with leading a cross-functional team to launch a new product within a tight deadline."

Action: "I facilitated effective communication among team members by setting up weekly Microsoft Teams meetings to identify bottlenecks in the process, and adjusted project timelines to ensure on-time delivery. I used a project management tool called Monday to keep us all on track and on the same page. There were times where I had to step in and work alongside individual team members to get the job on track and in doing so, I built really strong relationships with my teammates. "

Result: "As a result of my efforts, we not only met the deadline but also reduced project costs by 15%. This experience demonstrated my leadership, problem-solving, and time management skills and I am really proud of my team and our work."

Connection to the role you are interviewing for: “Based on this experience, I know coming into this role would be a good challenge for me to use the skills and abilities I’ve grown in my last job and apply them here. I’m ready for the next challenge and I know my past experience has been a great foundation that I will bring with me into this role to ensure my success here”.
